PREVIEW of selected music from The Lydian Gale Parr at PRELUDE '23: Saturday October 14 @ 3:30pm in the Segal Center

THE LYDIAN GALE PARR

A child emissary, a young boy, is sent from a city under siege to deliver a letter to the attacking general. But the emissary cannot find him; at every place of arrival, the general has just left. Traveling through space and time, the emissary begins to shapeshift, to manifest freely: as child, as boy, as girl, as woman, as the Lydian Gale Parr, who journeys from ancient cities to cargo ships on an infinite errand to ask for an end to violence. She slips in and out of disparate webs of belonging, yet holds fast to her quest. She is a ghost child of war.

The Lydian Gale Parr is a surreal and poetic chamber oratorio with music composed by Alaina Ferris and libretto by Karinne Keithley Syers and two ballets choreographed by Katy Pyle with their genderqueer company, Ballez. It will be directed by Meghan Finn and performed by an ensemble of 10 musicians and 4 dancers.

In April 2024, with the support of the New York City Women’s Fund and the Gross Foundation, The Lydian Gale Parr will premiere at Target Margin Theater in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, co-produced by Amanda+James (an interdisciplinary production company whose works highlight dance, contemporary classical music, and process-based collaboration) and The Tank (a New York City hub for new experimental theater).
